A Color Story
A Color Story | March 2021
Have you seen the headlines? Color is back. In my world, it's never been out. I think color makes a space more interesting and evokes all kinds of emotions. I vividly remember the canary yellow living room walls in the house I grew up in! This room by interior designer Katie Ridder reminds me of it. It was sunshine on a cloudy day, happy and upbeat. It was memorable. I get asked a lot about how to incorporate color into rooms so I thought I'd share a few ideas that I use for each type of client.
For The Neutral Loving Client An easy and noncommittal way of adding some color to your spaces is through art and accessories. In this gray dining room, the client fell in love with a vibrant painting by New Orleans artist Ashley Longshore and now it's the star of every dinner party.
For The Client Ready To Commit If you are ready to make a bigger commitment to color, try painting or wallpapering your ceiling. One of my clients is a huge art collector, so we kept her beautiful pecky cypress walls white to showcase the art and added color and dimension through the raspberry and navy wallpaper on the ceiling. In my own kitchen, I painted the cabinetry a beautiful pale blue. It makes me happy every day!
For The Client Who Is All In How much is too much? I feel like something, not everything, needs to be the star of the show. I pick a few things in a room to infuse with color and balance it with neutrals to give a place for the eye to rest. In this friend's entrance area, natural bamboo blinds and a dark wood floor balance the colorful Pierre Frey wallpaper.
My Favorite Colorists I always look for inspiration from designers and artists that use color the best.
